Latest News [index] Child support changes proposed

22 August, 2011

The Government has announced its intention to change the way child support is calculated to reflect:

  • the actual cost of raising children today;
  • the degree of shared care between parents with the threshold at which shared care is recognised being reduced from 40% of nights to 28% of nights; and
  • income available to both parents.

The changes are in response to over 2,000 submissions made regarding the current child support scheme. It is also recognised that social conditions and parenting have changed significantly since child support legislation was first introduced.

Amending legislation is likely to be introduced in the next few months.
